Health and Safety Policies Examples

If you employ 5 or more people you must, by law, have a written statement of your health and safety policy. This should be your own statement, specific to your firm, setting out your general policy for protecting the health and safety of your employees at work and the organisation and arrangements for putting that policy into practice.

Here follows some example of the types of content you would expect to see in a Health and Safety policy. this is by no means an exclusive list.

  • "To provide and maintain equipment and systems of work that are safe and without risks to health.
  • "To make arrangements for ensuring safety with absence of risks to health in connection with the use, handling, storage and transport of materials and substances.
  • "To provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the health and safety at work of employees and visitors.
  • "To maintain any place of work under the employers control in a condition that is safe and without risks to health and to provide and maintain means of access to and egress from it that are safe and without such risks.
  • "To provide and maintain a working environment for employees that is safe and without risks to health and is adequate as regards facilities and arrangements for their welfare at work.
  • "To provide protective equipment as is necessary for the health and safety at work of employees and students.
  • "To encourage staff to set high standards of health and safety by personal example.
  • "To monitor the effectiveness of health and safety provisions.
  • "To keep the employers Health and Safety Policy under regular review and to duly publish any amendments.
  • "It is equally a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, for everyone engaged in business activities to exercise responsibility and care in the prevention of injury and ill health to themselves and to others who may be affected by acts and omissions at work.
  • The employer will uphold Government legislation and Approved Codes of Practice on Health and Safety and will encourage and stimulate a safety conscious culture within its employees.
  • The employer recognises the need to carry out risk assessments and act upon its recommendations without bias, and to periodically review and maintain its content appropriately.
  • Issues on Health and Safety will be discussed in periodical staff meetings where all staff are invited to raise safety concerns and where essential actions are agreed.

This would be accompanied by usually two signatures on behalf of the company. These are usually the Health and Safety Represenative and the Managing Director.
